Front view. The Volvo 144 was manufactured by Volvo Cars in Torslanda, Sweden between 1966 and 1974. It was the first model to feature the boxy exterior that became the common styling of Volvos until the 1990s. The 144 was also the first Volvo to use the manufacturer’s famous naming system. The tri-digit nomenclature indicates the series, the number of cylinders and the number of doors. A 144 is the 1st series, a 4 cylinder and 4 doors.
Demonstrating Volvo’s reputation of safety first, styling second, the 144 was a step forward in the safety sphere. The front and rear sections were designed to collapse progressively during an accident, so that the central section remained intact and kept the passengers safe.
