There is an abundance of visual material related to Rabindranath Tagore. In the last few years of his life, he was a prolific painter himself, apart from being one of the most-photographed Indian personalities in history. His portrait was painted by a broad range of artists, including his nephews, Gaganendranath Tagore (1867-1938) and Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951), both pioneers of modern art in India. Gaganendranath's small and delicate, undated profile portrait in water colour probably shows Tagore in his forties.
