This earthenware figurine may depict a soldier holding a weapon, perhaps a club. Their shirt is painted in a pattern known to represent jaguar spots. Jaguars were symbols of authority and power throughout Mesoamerica and are characteristics a soldier would endeavor to attain. Earthenware figurines such as this were often placed in subterranean tombs (shaft tombs) in West Mexico.
