Nielssen was a popular painter in his time and was mostly known for his landscape paintings from the Norwegian coast. Nielssen went to study in Düsseldorf as was normal for n artist in his time to do, where he studied under the great Norwegian painter Hans Gude. We can see that Gude had a strong influence on his art from the period after his studies.
The fjord in the painting, Hardangerfjord, is the second longest fjord in Norway and the fifth longest fjord in the world.
