The portrait of Ferdinand I features the royal insignia - crown, mantle and sceptre. The King's crown, a symbol of independence and national unity, was made in 1881 from the steel of an Ottoman cannon captured at Plevna, after sketches by Theodor Aman. The military uniform of a general with the insignia of a field marshal and numerous decorations is centred on the Order of Michael the Brave, designed by King Ferdinand himself.
