During Raden Saleh's 22-year residence in Europe, he not only improved his painting skills but also took the time to study various sciences such as Math, Geodesy, Palaeontolgy. Upon his return to Java, he documented his exploration in Java in scientific reports: after finding some old bones, he recorded the location of excavation, described and analysed them. His contribution was acknowledged by foreign researchers such as Eugene Dubois, LJC van Es and GHR von Koenigswald.
