Lodovico Martinengo

Bartolomeo Veneto1530

The National Gallery, London

Ludovico Martinengo came from a noble family of Brescia. The provenance supports the identification of the sitter.

The fragmentary letters of the inscription have been thought in the past to give the date 16 June 1530. But the costume is of a later date, and this would suggest that the date ought to be read as MDXXXXVI spread over two lines (i.e. 1546).
