Silver salt print on baryta paper (modern print). This portrait taken in the surroundings of Cusco shows a peasant mowing a plot of land in front of a small dwelling made of adobe (unfired earth bricks), stone and an ichu (thatched) roof. He wears, in addition to his work clothes, the classic woollen hat known as a 'chullo'. His cheek is swollen, and indeed the inventory of the Chambi archive indicates that the man is chewing coca leaves, nowadays still a common practice to alleviate the sense of fatigue and hunger while working.
