SEEING AND DESCRIBING

While Ellen and Wilhelmina take snapshots of the people they meet, Ida Uhse almost exclusively devotes herself to describing the sights they visit:
“Tuesday, 1st of Jan. 1901, El-Hag Kandeel. From here we shall ride to the ruins of caves, tombs and temples. There is an abundance of those around here. The Countess and I got up at five thirty in the morning to ride out to the tombs, which lie alongside the mountains. “At ten in the morning, we returned and wished everyone a happy new year, and then we continued on our journey. All around us we could see beautiful mountains with shallow grave openings. “At 6pm, we arrived at Manfalut, where we stayed overnight.
