In 1885 Freud won a scholarship to study in Paris under the French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. "Une leçon clinique du Dr. Charcot à la Salpêtrière" shows the famous doctor demonstrating his techniques to a classroom of students, while a woman swoons in a state of hysteria. This engraving by E. Pirodon after the oil painting by Andre Brouillet, hangs above the couch in Freud’s study.
