One of a number of Chase's paintings with Oriental motifs and inspired by Diego Velázquez and seventeenth-century Dutch masters, a fleeting moment is captured with the model striking a "studious yet captured pose", according to the painting's description at the Philbrook Museum of Art Web site. The work features a "flourish of contours, stunning colors, decorative patterns and broad, broken brushwork".
