A fruit plate decorated with a female figure with a rich dress on a blue background

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma
Parma, Italy

This piece, referred to as a plate or fruit bowl, is a good example of late 15th-Century production in Faenza and it fits well into the vast family of "Belle donne" genre, reproducing the motif of the amorous portrait. In the center of the composition a young woman is portrayed in profile, facing left, with a shaved forehead and the hair gathered at the back of the head and held in place by an embroidered net, according to the fashion of the time. Some thin chains encircle the lady's neck and one rests on the chest, which is covered by a camisole that emerges from the yellow bodice. The shaded profile is inserted in a medallion with a dark blue background and surrounded by variously decorated small frames. All around it a severe two-tone ornament in yellow and blue develops, which makes the strong color contrast stand out; the subdivision of the space, divided into quarters around the figure of the lady, forms a large flower, whose petals are filled with complex racemes inspired by the oriental world.
