A fruit tree grows on Philbert Ntaciyica’s farmland in Burundi’s Northeastern Giteranyi commune. Like many farmers in Burundi, increasingly erratic outbursts of heavy rain have devastated his farm in the past, washing away all of his crops and fertile topsoil. Under a UNEP-backed project ‘Adapting to Climate Change in the Lake Victoria Basin (ACC-LVB), Philbert has built grass-lined terraces along his farm which prevents his soil from washing away. He’s also planted fruit trees among his crops which provide shade and help lock moisture into the soil, boosting the productivity of his crops. He’s able to harvest the grass to feed his goats, reducing the money spent on animal feed.
