In 1797 for his coronation Paul I wore a full dress uniform of an officer of the Preobrazhensky Lifeguard Regiment (Paul I was the patron of the Regiment). This tradition remained unchanged till 1917. The full dress uniform and the waistcoat from the Gatchina Palace collection are the ones the Emperor was wearing the night before his assassination on March 11, 1801. In 1833 Nicholas I ordered to transfer personal belongings of his father to the Gatchina Palace. These items were kept in the Oval Study of Paul I.
