Piri Reis was born around 1465 in Gallipoli. He fought many naval battles and became a naval commander, leading the Ottoman fleet that fought the Portuguese in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. Between wars, he drew his first world map, compiled 'The Book of Sea Lore' (a manual of sailing directions), and drew a second world map in 1528.
