A map of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation by the famous British cartographer John Speed from the first half of the 17th century. On the back of this atlas map is an English text entitled "The Description of Germany" describing at length the Holy Roman Empire, whose territories are delineated in colour on Speed's map. Above the map are eight vedutas, namely of Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Vienna, Prague, Cologne, Nuremberg, Strasbourg and Augsburg. On the right and left sides of the map are ten depictions of figures representing either a couple representing a particular social status or a couple representing a particular nationality. Specifically, the nobility, merchants and countrymen are represented here, while in the case of nationalities, the Czechs and the Swiss are represented.
