Mount Vernon, United States

Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson prepared their map of Virginia in 1750-1751 amidst rising tensions between France and England over control of the interior. Completed from actual surveys, it offered the most accurate depiction of the region during the eighteenth century and went through four editions between 1753 and 1775. Regardless of which edition George Washington might have owned, his "Fry and Jeffersons Map of Virginia" - valued at $2 among the over fifty maps inventoried in his Study - would have reminded him of his days surveying and fighting in Virginia's rugged western lands.

Gift: Jess and Grace Pavey Fund, 2005 [MAP-6475/A-B]
