Stockholm, Sweden

A monstrance is used at Catholic ceremonies and processions to hold the host, the communion bread. This gilt copper monstrance could have been made in Central Europe in the middle of the 14th Century. The host is supposed to be placed in the crescent shaped holder – the lunula – in the centre of the monstrance. The cylindrical glass that should be protecting the host is missing.
