    COPTER USED IN CHIMNEY REPAIR OPERATION VIJ. A NOVEL 'SKYHOOK AIRLIFT TO RESTRICT NOISE STEMMING FROM BANKSIDE POWER STATION IN THE HEART OF LONDON WAS SUCCESSFULLY CARRIED OUT THIS MORNING (TUESDAY). USING A BEA TWIN-ENGINED SIKORSKY HELICOPTER, NEARLY A TON OF EQUIPMENT CONSISTING OF TWIN STAINLESS STEEL SILENCERS WERE INSTALLED THE CHIMNEY STEAM VENTS SOME 320FT ABOVE STREET LEVEL. THE INSTALLATION WAS CARRIED OUT BY AITON AND COMPANY OF DERBY. THE SILENCERS, KNOWN AS BLOWDOWN MUTES, WERE SUPPLIED BY PULSATION CONTROLS OF WEST DRAYTON, MIDDLESEX. THEY WERE FITTED TO MEET THE EXACTING REQUIREMENTS OF THE CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD WHO MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO KEEP THE LEVEL OF NOISE LIKELY TO AFFECT THE PUBLIC AS LOW AS POSSIBLE. THE MUTE WEIGHS 1,000 LBS., AND IS 6 FEET LONG AND 3 FEET IN DIAMETER. PHOTO SHOWS: CLOSE-UP OF THE TOP OF BANKSIDE POWER STATION'S CHIMNEY THIS MORNING AFTER THE TWO "BLOWDOWN MUTES" WERE PLACED INTO POSITION BY THE BEA HELICOPTER. THE COST OF USING THE 'COPTER METHOD OF REPLACEMENT AS APPOSED TO THE USUAL SCAFFOLDING WAS GREATLY SLASHED. J.5593 INDUSTRY - FUEL & POWER - POWER STATIONS - BANKSIDE
