John Gay's photograph captures a uniformed policeman, apparantely admonishing a boy who is climbing on one of the bronze lion sculptures at the base of Nelson's Column. Also known as The Nelson Monument, this memorial column was built between 1839 and 1842. Bronze lions sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer were added in 1867. The National Gallery is visible in the background.
