In 1628, the 16-year-old Prince Janusz Radziwiłł commenced his Grand Tour of Europe. In 1631 he enrolled in Leiden University, and two years later went on a diplomatic mission as the envoy of the Polish king. It was during that period that he sat for a portrait painted by Bailly, a local artist linked with the academic circles of Leiden, who captured to perfection both the physiognomy of the prince and his clothes in the latest fashion.
