A Red Bergamot in a Landscape

Aert Schoumanca. 1750 - ca. 1775

Amsterdam, Netherlands

In the course of his long and successful career, Aert Schouman took a large number of pupils under his wing. One of them here imitated the kind of depictions his teacher made. Schouman’s mastery becomes evident when the two works are compared. The leaves in this unsigned
watercolour are somewhat static and stiffly painted, and the colouring of the work as a whole is also much less expressive.
