A sailor couple

Raymundus ('Reimond') Josephus Petrus Kimpe1943

Maritime Museum Rotterdam

Maritime Museum Rotterdam
Rotterdam, Netherlands

A French sailor - with the characteristic red pumpkin on his cap - and a woman sitting on a cafe terrace with a wide river in the background. A seagoing cargo ship sails on the river. The couple sits with their backs to the water, on the table in front of them are two glasses and a few playing cards. A red and white striped marquise can be seen above them. There is a bollard on the quay to the left behind the sailor couple. On the right, across the water, there is a quay wall and a building on the corner.
The woman can be seen as a 'lady of light morals', a prostitute, or as the sailor's wife or girlfriend. In both cases she represents the (sexual, physical and / or social) desire of the sailor when he is at sea. Dimensions of the painting (wxh): 85,7 x 100,7 cm.
