A scholar in his Study

Formerly this figure has been identified as an alchemist. In fact there is nothing in his room to connect with alchemical experiments and he is simply a scholar. There was a well established tradition in Dutch 17th century painting of representing scholars in their studies. There is a very similar treatment of the subject by Wyck in the Gemäldegaleri at Kassel, Germany.
