In Japan the techniques for bamboo making were greatly improved during the middle of the Edo period. During this period activities enjoyed by the cultured including the drinking of sencha tea—all of which were the result of the admiration of Chinese poems, texts and ink painting—became popular.

    Akinari Chakai by the head of the Issa-an school: In this scene we see Ike Taiga’s hanging scroll depicting grapes on the wall and a branch heavy with fruit hanging from a large bamboo basket in front of it. This was designed to emulate the image of the Silk Road and Central Asia as imagined by intellectuals of Edo period.
