Following the establishment of Solidarity, strikes and protests were one of the ways to fight the communist regime. On 16 August 1981 Solidarity organized a convoy of trucks and buses that passed through downtown Warsaw, in protest against the difficulties in stocking shops with food products. The militia reacted by blocking the intersection of Aleje Jerozolimskie and Marszałkowska streets.
