Visiting the flower market is a unique custom in Guangzhou during the Chinese New Year. Guangzhou is surrounded by the Pearl River and has a humid climate, which is perfect for growing flowers. Around 917－971, Guangzhou area was famous for producing flowers. In the early Qing Dynasty, Guangzhou flower market was one of the "four markets" in Guangdong province. By the middle of the Qing Dynasty, the flowers and plants sold included traditional kumquats, peach blossoms, daffodils, bellflowers, cockscombs, etc. In the 1920s, the Guangzhou Flower Market was held regularly from the 28th day of the lunar year to the late night of New Year's Eve, becoming a Spring Festival custom, also known as the "Spring Flower Market", which has been passed down to this day. Guangzhou people love flowers, and flowers are also an indispensable part of Guangzhou people's home decoration.
