Originally built as a Benedictine Abbey church, founded in 1087, it became a parish church when the Abbey was bought from the Crown at the Dissolution by the people of Tewkesbury. Concerns about the building's restoration led to the setting up of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings by William Morris.
