Mortars, always accompanied by their pestle, were widely used in apothecary shop to grind herbs and natural ingredients used in pharmacy, to the point that the action of pounding had over time become a true art. The pestle was used by taking advantage of its technical characteristics, and was moved with a rotary motion from above. The task of pestling herbs was entrusted to the figure of the pestler, whose job, distinct from that of the apothecary, was regulated by rules and identified by insignias frequently created by contemporary artists
