According to IUCN, globally, the leatherback status is now “Vulnerable”. However, the Southwest Atlantic subpopulation is listed as “Critically Endangered”. In Brazil, this species has been included in the Official Red List of Threatened Species, published by the Brazilian Environmental Ministry.
Leatherbacks have a deeply notched upper jaw with 2 cusps on the head. They feed on cnidarians (soft-animals), such as jellyfish and medusae.
