The first series of 12 Little Golden Books were published in 1942, including "The Little Red Hen" and "The Poky Little Puppy." Three editions of this series sold out within 5 months, totaling 1.5 million books sold. The series has sold steadily and strong since that time, appealing to both adults and children in subjects and price points. In more recent years, besides the original format story books, the publisher has branched out into other formats, including Little Golden Melody Books in the 1980s, with musical chips embedded in every page, and books on CD-ROM in 2000. The line now includes activity books and coloring books, in larger formats, covering more contemporary Golden Book subjects from Sesame Street to Pokemon.
