This flag was originally used at an Adelaide Grand Prix between 1985 and 1995. The chequered flag has been waved at motorsport events since the early 1900s, though its exact origins are uncertain. It is the most recognised of racing flags, and signals the start and end of the race. In all 11 editions of the Adelaide Grand Prix, the race was officially drawn to an end by flag-waver Glen Dix, who had a career in officiating Australian motorsport spanning many decades and who also waved off entrants in the annual Bay to Birdwood.
