Adoration of the Kings

Alessandro Turchiearly 17th century

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

This work is a youthful masterpiece by Alessandro Turchi. The partly concealed figure who looks out at the observer from behind the group of kneeling Magi is almost surely a self-portrait. Turchi was a pupil of Felice Brusasorzi and perhaps of Jacopo Palma as well. The chromatic freshness, based primarily on brilliant, contrasting tones of red, is especially striking.
