This painting is a very interesting composition, above all for the progressive gradation of the figures on different planes, thereby giving notable depth to the panel. The representation of the Mystical Lamb, surrounded by celestial musicians, is a clear allusion to the Lamb of God described in the Book of the Apocalypse (Ap. 5:6,8), commonly identified with the person of Christ as an innocent sacrificed victim. It was the Society of Jesus who most spread the symbology of the Lamb or “Agnus Dei” in Portugal, a theme very often repeated in Spanish painting from the "siglo de oro" era (Zurbarán, Juan de Roelas, Baltazar Gomes Figueira, Josefa d’Óbidos).
