Sound recorder F, a military version of the K4 tape recorder, was designed for the German Wehrmacht. Sound recorder F was used by resistance groups in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands for telephone tapping. With the aid of electronic control units, the sound recorder started up when preset telephone connections were dialled. It was the only Wehrmacht sound recorder to use radio frequency bias to better understand noisy foreign-language phone conversations.
