This photograph features the model airplane invented by Zoilo H. García.
According to a report in the Crónica Social section of the Dominican magazine Blanco y Negro, García developed a new airplane model in 1911 and was subsequently hired by the United States government to build a prototype based on his design. His invention was said to “resolve the problem of the plane’s stability.”
Drawn from the research of CUNY DSI Research Associate Vivian Guerrero Aquino, this story is part of the Institute’s Ellis Island Project, which chronicles the arrival of Dominican immigrants and preserves their personal histories.
