The United States, like their German counterparts, also developed many notable large airships, among them the USS Akron. With an overall length of 785 feet and when fully inflated carried 6.5 million cubic feet of helium gas. As part of the Museum’s U.S. airship display is a duraluminum structural frame from the USS Akron. Tragically, the USS Akron crashed in a terrible storm off the coast of New Jersey in 1933.
