Museum of the Civil Guard

Museum of the Civil Guard
Madrid, Spain

Taxidermy dog that served in the Canine Service of the Civil Guard, specifically in the detection of explosives. As well as other earlier medals, on June 11, 2013, he received the PDSA Gold Medal—a prestigious, internationally recognized award from the United Kingdom. Only 22 dogs have ever received the award. Ajax’s standout moment of service was detecting a second device attached to an official vehicle during terrorist attacks in Palmanova, Palma de Mallorca. Two members of the Civil Guard died in the attacks, which were carried out by the terrorist group ETA. His handler thought he should be remembered, so when Ajax died he commissioned a taxidermist in order to donate his body to the museum.
