Fan with carved and pierced mother of pearl sticks backed with burgau (a type of sea snail shell prized for its iridescent, translucent quality).

The double canepin leaf is painted on the recto with a pastiche of an eighteenth century fete champêtre; signed Donzel.

The verso is painted with a gilt scrolling border.

Donzel (French, various).
A family of painters who started a school of drawing and design.
Charles (1824 – 1889) and Jules-Pierre (b. 1832) were known to have painted fan leaves during the Nineteenth Century.
