Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper artist Albert Berghaus entered the Petersen House on April 15, 1865. He created this imagined death scene based on the recollections of Petersen House residents. Future depictions showed more people in a larger room, leading to the eventual nickname “Rubber Room.”
