Alice Austen House
Staten Island, NY, United States

Alice Austen was not only an accomplished photographer but also an avid cyclist. At the time, it was unusual for women to ride bicycles; however, Alice promoted the activity as a tool to give women greater freedom through mobility. A founding member of the Staten Island Bicycle Club, she was fascinated by modern modes of transportation and holds the additional distinction of being the first woman on Staten Island to own a car.
