Allegorical Portrait of Sir John Luttrell

This painting presents a surprising image of the English officer John Luttrell. He stands naked amidst a naval battle but his arm is restrained by a woman holding an olive branch. She represents Peace and alludes to a recent treaty between England and France. The portrait is by the Netherlandish artist Hans Eworth, who settled in London in 1544 and became a successful portraitist at the English court.
