This is a portrait of Woman chief Amamata Mumuni. She is pognaa (woman chief) of Duori.
Among the Dagaaba, Sisala and Waala peoples of the Upper West region of Ghana, women leadership pertains in local communities. The Sisala call the women hala kuoro. The Dagaaba and Waala call them pognaa. These terms mean “woman chief.” Magazia is another women leadership which exists among the Hausa migrant communities.
