The Amitabha Buddha has an oval face with elegant, tender features. It is seated in the lotus position, and its two hands form the “Mudra of the Nine Levels of Rebirth” (九品印, thumb and middle finger touching in both a raised right hand and a lowered left hand). The style of late Goryeo Buddhist sculpture can be seen in the gyeju (髻珠, jewel up near the crown of the head), the sash knot on the undergarment, the diamond-shaped decoration on the left side of the chest, and the creases of the robe on the left forearm. As such, this sculpture exemplifies the style that was popular in the 14th century of the late Goryeo Dynasty. The Amitabha Buddha is adjoined by two attendant Bodhisattvas (Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta), who are magnificently clad from head to toe in elaborate decorations and accessories.
