The Amrita Bazar Patrika was a popular nationalist newspaper. It was started in 1868 by two brothers, Sisir Kumar Ghosh and Moti Lal Ghosh. It was initially a Bengali weekly. Later it became a daily and turned into an English newspaper overnight when the Vernacular Press Act was imposed in 1878. Here is the first page of Amrita Bazar Patrika of 15 August 1947, celebrating India's independence.
