Following his studies in Poland, the artist left for Munich, where he graduated in 1876 and lived for the rest of his life. He became famous for his paintings of wolves shown in the night-time winter landscape. The painting exhibited in Wrocław is one of the numerous variations on this subject. In 1889, Wierusz-Kowalski was granted the prestigious title of Honorary Professor of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts.
