Anne Catherine McDonnell was Countess of Antrim in her own right, inheriting the title and estates on the death of her father in 1791. She first married Sir Henry Vane-Tempest of Wynyard Hall in Yorkshire but secondly, contrived a love match with Edmund Phelps, the son of a hatter and an auctioneer. She was largely responsible for the establishment of the 4 acre Walled Garden at Glenarm Castle in the 1820s.
