This is one of the works commissioned by the Cathedral Chapter to be part of the choir stalls designed as part of the Neoclassical renovation of the cathedral’s apse, commisioned to Melchor de Prado in 1754. Since the project was never carried out, the artworks were relocated to other parts of the building.
Inspired by Mengs’ Annunciation kept in the Royal Palace of Madrid, this piece encapsulates Ferro’s stylistic features, such as the precision of the drawing and the soft modeling that reflect his connection to Italian painting. The composition follows a pyramidal structure, with the Virgin kneeling at her interrupted tasks, as the Archangel Gabriel approaches from the other side of a table holding a vase of lilies—a symbol of Mary’s purity.
Above the scene, God the Father and the Holy Spirit preside, watching over the moment.
