The Dutch painter was in Italy for many years. This painting was most likely done during his stay in Naples from 1633 to 1637 or 1638. At this time his painting acquired a special treatment of surfaces, like the faceted planes shining with reflected light, which here originates from a candle, in a dark atmosphere. The painting was acquired by the Uffizi in 2004.
