Annunciation - María

Mestre Pero

The Catedral de Santiago Foundation
Santiago de Compostela, Spain

Sculptural work, probably created in the workshop of Mestre Pero, who was active in Coimbra in the first quarter of the 14th century. This particular kind of iconography became very popular in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It depicts the Annunciation by the Archangel Saint Gabriel and Mary's Immaculate Conception, showing her towards the end of her pregnancy.

It has traditionally been linked to the offerings made by Queen Elizabeth of Portugal (the Holy Queen) on her pilgrimage to Santiago in 1325.

The pieces remained in the cathedral retrochoir until the mid-19th century, when they were transferred to the Sancti Spiritus Chapel then subsequently to the Cathedral Museum collection.
